Diagnosis
Motile cells broadly oval with deeply incised equatorial girdle; chloroplasts two or more, golden-yellow, bearing stalked pyrenoids, peridinin main xanthophyll pigment; theca of delicate polygonal plates; flagella, two, dissimilar, one longitudinal other transverse; nucleus of typical dinoflagellate type. Cells of coccoid phase broadly oval, lacking flagella and theca.
