Diagnosis

Diagnosis_Genus: Lobotes Cuvier & Valancienne. The muzzle is short, the lower jaw prominent, the upper body, the dorsal and anal fins elongate their posterior angle, so that with their rounded caudal it seems that their body ends in three lobes. Four groups of very small points are seen towards the tips of their jaws. There are some in both oceans.

Diagnosis_Species: Holocentrus surinamensis Bloch. Funfzehn Strahlen in der Afterflosse. K. 6, Br. I4, B. 1/6, A. 3/I5, S. I7, R. I2/28. Holocentrus radiis quindecim in pinna ani. B. VI, P. XIV, V. I/VI, A. III/XV, C. XVII, D. XII/XXVIII.

Other description (Watson, 1996): Adult lobotids are large (to ca. 1 m), moderately deep-bodied and compressed, with a concave forehead, small eye, serrate preopercular margin, and continuous dorsal fin. The rounded caudal fin and rounded posterior lobes of the dorsal and anal fins account for the common name.

Etymology

Lobotes: Latin, lobus = lobe (Fishbase)

Type species

The type species of the genus Lobotes is Holocentrus surinamensis (Bloch, 1790).

Ecology

Tripletail generally occur along the Gulf coast from April through early October and migrate south during fall and winter. although apparently abundant nowhere, adult and juvenile tripletail are not uncommon in bays, sounds, and estuarines along the north-central Gulf coast during summer (Ditty & Shaw, 1994).
Lobotes surinamensis can be find in Tropical and subtropical waters of all oceans. Western Atlantic: Canada to Massachusetts, USA and Bermuda to Argentina. Eastern Atlantic: Mediterranean Sea; Madeira to the Gulf of Guinea; Indian Ocean: South Africa; it was also reported from the Somali coast, Karachi (Pakistan) and Iranian coasts of the Sea of Oman. Western Pacific: Japan, Fiji and Tuvalu (Fishbase).

Life cycle

Age at first maturity is one year (Richards, 2009).
Female specimens were significantly longer and heavier than males in this study (Strelcheck et al., 2004).
Tripletail can reach sexual maturity by age 1, with estimates of the size at sexual maturity ranging from 350 to 500 mm TL. Fifty percent of females reached sexual maturity by 494 to 594 mm TL and approximately 1 to 2 years of age. All males greater than 380 mm were sexually mature. In general, tripletail growth is considered to be rapid, and estimates of maximum age have ranged from 4 to 7 years, with sevral studies speculating that tripletail reach even older ages (Strelcheck et al., 2004).
