Definition

The primary extrusive organelle associated with the apical complex of apicomplexans, colpodellids and perkinsids. These organelles tend to be clubshaped whereby the narrower, distal ends are positioned just beneath the plasma membrane and nested within the central opening of a conoid. Rhoptries, together with micronemes, are unique secretory organelles that release a variety of proteins and lipids associated with motility, adhesion to host cells, invasion of host cells, and establishment of the parasitophorous vacuole.
