Other description (Aquabase): The body is high, almost round and very compressed laterally. The base color of juvenile specimens is silvery with yellowish reflections mainly on the dorsal fin. The iris is very large and its eye is crossed by a dark band. A second stripe is located just at the level of the caps and borders one side of the anal fin. With age the colors fade (especially the yellow).

The type species of the genus Monodactylus is Monodactylus falciformis (Lacepède, 1801).
Ecology
Monodactylus argenteus lives in Indo-West Pacific: Red Sea and East Africa, including the Persian Gulf to Samoa, north to the Yaeyamas, south to New Caledonia and Australia. It is known from the freshwater tidal zone of the Mekong delta (Fishbase).
